Standards-Based Grading

Standards-based is a way of looking at learning and grading that focuses on accurately assessing what students know, understand, and are able to do. Grades are seen as a measure of proficiency against a standard. For science, we look at scientific skills paired with content. Behaviors get reported separately, and attempts are made to make sure to minimize any grade inflators (extra credit, group work) and deflators (late work penalties, zeros for academic dishonesty). For me, standards-based grading is a healthier way to look at assessment practices, and students report that it makes the grading in the class more clear.
